The biggest move of the NBA off-season is official, with LeBron James signing a two-year, $8 million (A$11.4 million) deal with the Philadelphia 76ers.

The contract includes a player option for the second season, which gives James the flexibility to become a free agent again next summer while limiting Philadelphia’s long-term financial commitment.
Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul confirmed the agreement to ESPN, before James announced the decision himself on social media.
“I believe I can help make the Philadelphia 76ers a championship team and I am so excited to energise a new fan base and start this incredible journey one last time,” James wrote.
The move brings an end to one of the longest-running stories of the off-season after James elected not to re-sign with the Los Angeles Lakers.
Following weeks of speculation linking him to several contenders, with James widely expected to return to either Cleveland or Miami, the four-time champion has shocked the NBA world by picking Philadelphia in what is expected to be one of the final chapters of his legendary career.
Philadelphia had already transformed its roster earlier this off-season by acquiring Jaylen Brown from the Boston Celtics. Adding James to a core featuring Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, Brown and highly rated rookie V.J. Edgecombe immediately elevates the 76ers into the conversation as one of the leading championship contenders for the 2026-27 season.
James’ arrival also reunites him with Klutch Sports client Tyrese Maxey, with the shared agency connection reportedly playing a role in bringing the deal together.
On the court, James is expected to slot in at power forward, providing another elite playmaker alongside Maxey while easing the offensive burden on Embiid. His ability to orchestrate the offence, push the pace in transition and create open looks for teammates gives Philadelphia another dimension, particularly during the minutes Embiid is off the floor.
What makes the deal even more remarkable is that James, a future Hall of Famer widely regarded as one of the greatest players in NBA history alongside Michael Jordan, Bill Russell and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, will be just the seventh highest-paid player on Philadelphia’s roster.
The contract shapes as one of the greatest value signings the league has ever seen, with James set to earn just US$3,876,529 (A$5,543,158) during the 2026-27 season before rising to US$4,070,354 (A$5,818,368) in 2027-28 if he exercises his player option.
The signing also caps a remarkable off-season for the 76ers, who have further strengthened their depth with additions including Dean Wade, Anfernee Simons and Ariel Hukporti.
In announcing his decision, James revealed he had seriously considered retirement before ultimately deciding he still had more to give.
“I thought I was done when the season ended,” James said.

“I wasn’t ready to announce it, and I knew I needed some time to really decide, but I was pretty sure I played my last game. I was honest at that last press conference when I said I needed to look at myself and decide if I still love this game. I still truly love this game, and I have more to give.
“The last few weeks have really been special. I’ve never been able to have no clue what to do and take real time to just think. I’ve had an incredible few months with all the people I love trying to figure it all out. This is my last decision. I’m not going for money. I’m not going for family. What am I really playing for at this point? I still want to sacrifice. I still want to work. I still want to grind. I still want to compete, to win and to have a chance at the feeling of winning another championship.”
James, 41, enters his 24th NBA season as the league’s all-time leading scorer and one of the most decorated players in basketball history, having won four NBA championships, four MVP awards and four Finals MVP honours.
His signing gives Philadelphia one of the league’s most talented starting line-ups on paper, with Maxey, Brown, Edgecombe, James and Embiid forming a formidable five capable of challenging the reigning champion New York Knicks, as well as the San Antonio Spurs and Oklahoma City Thunder.
James finished his announcement by paying tribute to the three franchises that shaped his career.
