Western Bulldogs legend Brad Johnson says he’s still not convinced by his former team despite it currently sitting inside the top eight ahead of a defining Sunday fixture.

The Bulldogs on Saturday night snapped a 20-year drought at the Cattery by defeating an undermanned Geelong and giving Luke Beveridge’s side a chance to play finals, pending on whether Carlton can beat the ninth-placed Giants and keep them from qualifying.

It comes after the Dogs suffered shock losses to West Coast and Hawthorn over the last fortnight to put their once seemingly ensured September spot in jeopardy as enormous pressure was heaped on Beveridge and the club as a whole.

Speaking on Fox Footy after Saturday’s game, Johnson remains sceptical on the Dogs after leaving themselves in a precarious position of relying on other results.

“I’m happy for them tonight, breaking the drought down in GHMBA, their second half was better football,” he began.

“But it’s still sitting deep within me about what’s happened against Hawthorn and West Coast. I don’t know why it’s sitting there, but it is.

“Obviously tomorrow with what is still to come. It’s just the situation they shouldn’t have put themselves in.”

The six-time All-Australian suggested that should the Dogs make finals, they’re unlikely to have a significant influence on the post-season.

“I still haven’t seen enough on what sort of impact the Bulldogs can have. I know it can change, it has changed quickly for them in the past, but that’s the past,” Johnson added.

“It doesn’t necessarily mean it’s going to happen again.

“When they get the ball movement on their terms and they play a reasonable style, you can see how quickly they can score.

“But the opposition they had tonight, it was a bit of a grind for the Cats, who just fell away due to talent.”

Of course, this time last year the Dogs found themselves in a similar position, relying on Collingwood beating Carlton in that infamous Round 23 clash to feature in the finals.

The tables have now turned, with the Dogs hoping the Blues are able to take care of GWS in Sunday night’s clash at Marvel Stadium.

Asked on Fox Footy if the Dogs players, like last year when they were in Tasmania, will get together to watch the game and cheer on Carlton, gun forward Cody Weightman said: “Yeah I think we will.

“Last year obviously we were cheering for Collingwood, this year it’s Carlton.

“I grew up going for Collingwood, I didn’t think I’d ever go for Carlton, but here I am!”
