Former Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe and ex-Italy coach Antonio Conte are two other names reportedly in the running.
Carrick is feeling the heat after a stunning 4-1 Champions League loss to Como during the week, dropping to a 1-2 record in the tournament.
Their Premier League record this season is even worse.
In what is their worst start in 40 years, United have won just one game from seven and sit 13th on the ladder.
Carrick and United will aim to get their season back on track when they take on Bournemouth this weekend.
Nagelsmann has been out of work since resigning from his Germany role after a disappointing World Cup earlier in the year.
Germany were knocked out in the round of 32 after being upset by Paraguay.
He is said to be interested in discussing the United role with the glamour club’s front office if it does becomes vacant.
