Fresh off a 38-point masterclass in Game 1, Jalen Brunson found things far less comfortable in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference finals, as the New York Knicks steadied themselves to take a commanding 2-0 series lead over the Cleveland Cavaliers with a 109-93 win at Madison Square Garden.

Brunson’s first half was quiet, and it wasn’t just the defence drawing attention. He also found himself at the centre of renewed debate around his style of play, with frustration spilling over late in the second quarter when a call went his way after contact from Max Strus. Strus drove into Brunson, there was only light contact, but the Knicks guard went to the floor, arms flailing, and the basket was waved off as an offensive foul.
It was a moment that added to growing scrutiny around foul-drawing tactics, with Brunson increasingly mentioned in the same conversations as Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who has long been the league’s most talked-about figure in that space.
Once the basketball settled, though, it was the Knicks who took control.
New York carried the momentum from their Game 1 comeback straight into another composed showing. Cleveland looked more stable early and even briefly levelled the game at the start of the second half, but the Knicks responded in emphatic fashion, ripping off an 18-0 run that completely flipped the contest.

From there, the Cavaliers were forced into catch-up mode. They did manage to trim the margin to seven early in the fourth quarter, hinting at another late twist, but unlike Game 1, there was no collapse from New York. Missed free throws and empty possessions stalled Cleveland’s push, and the Knicks answered every run with one of their own.
By the closing minutes, the margin had blown out again, with New York stretching the lead to its biggest of the game inside the final three minutes to shut the door for good.
Even with Brunson kept relatively quiet in scoring terms early, Josh Hart stepped up with a playoff career-high 26 points on 10-of-21 shooting, including 5-of-11 from deep, adding seven assists and relentless energy on defence.
Brunson eventually found his rhythm, finishing with 19 points and a playoff-best 14 assists, controlling the offence even without dominating the scoring load.
Mikal Bridges added 19 points, while Karl-Anthony Towns chipped in 18 points and 13 rebounds as New York’s balance once again proved too much.
For Cleveland, Donovan Mitchell led with 26 points and James Harden added 18, but the offence never found sustained rhythm when it mattered.
The Cavaliers had their window early in the fourth, but it closed quickly. This time, the Knicks didn’t blink.
The series now moves to Cleveland for Games 3 and 4, with the Knicks firmly in control and the Cavaliers left needing a response to avoid slipping further behind.
