Legendary Sydney Kings head coach Brian Goorjian has called out rival Adelaide 36ers coach Mike Wells, labelling his officiating rant aimed at Matthew Dellavedova as “weak” on the eve of Game 4 of the NBL Championship Series.

Just 48 hours after Game 3 – where the Kings claimed a 106–93 win to take a 2–1 series lead – Goorjian responded to reports the 36ers had approached NBL referee boss Scott Butler for a “please explain” regarding Dellavedova’s defence on reigning MVP Bryce Cotton.
Wells voiced frustration over the lack of fouls called on Dellavedova despite the pressure he applied to Cotton.
“Matthew Dellavedova played how many minutes? He had zero fouls, guys,” he said.
“Okay, zero fouls. This was the exact same thing that we had in Game 1. Now the scoring was different. The foul output for the game in Game 1 was 11 to 24. Today was 11 to 24. The main guy that’s on Bryce Cotton had zero fouls.
“I mean, if they want to beat up the MVP and take him out, that’s what the refs have allowed him to do. He doesn’t even get to the free throw line, guys.”
Speaking on the Big Sports Breakfast on Tuesday morning, Goorjian hit back strongly at Wells’ comments.
“Let’s go here. Total respect for Bryce Cotton as a basketball player. Total respect for Kendric Davis as a basketball player.” he said.
“With Delly, this coach [Mike Wells] hasn’t been around the block.”
“And now you’re bringing in all the stuff that’s going on with their manager, our manager, the trash talk — whatever. Great. That’s showtime. That brings people to the stadium.
“But this is the game, and this is about respect.”
“Matthew Dellavedova talks to LeBron James. His championship in Cleveland – he praises to this day Delly’s job on [Steph] Curry and what he did there, taking Curry out of that series.”
“We have a bronze medal for this country because of the job he did on Luka [Dončić].”
“So there’s a track record there, and there should be respect for him on how he goes about his business as a competitor and as a man.
“To go in the paper and disrespect him like that and talk about the referees, I thought was weak.”
“They can go where they want to go. We’re bringing the same defensive tenacity to Bryce in Game 4, and we’ll see where it takes us.
“But Matt, he is an Australian icon. He deserves his respect — his pay cheque. His NBA career, he’s been there and done that, and got there for what he’s doing with Bryce defensively. It is legal, it’s tough, and it is why he is who he is.”
With tensions rising between both sides, Game 4 is shaping up as the most explosive yet, with the 36ers hosting the Kings at 7:30pm AEDT at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre.
