After a “long journey” back, Matildas star Sam Kerr netted her 100th for Chelsea in her playing return after a 20-month injury absence and declared she was “glad it’s over”.

Kerr had been kept on the bench for the opening fixture of the Women’s Super League against Manchester City before being unleashed as a late substitute in the Blues’ 3-1 victory at Aston Villa.

In her first game for Chelsea since December 2023 after suffering an ACL injury in a training camp in January 2024, Kerr made her presence felt, scoring the third goal in her team’s second-straight league win.

“It feels good, obviously really happy but just a lot of relief,” Kerr, 32, told Chelsea’s social media team after the match.

“It’s been a bit of a long journey, so I’m glad it’s over,”

Reaching the 100-goal milestone was something beyond even Kerr’s wildest dreams.

“It’s massive, when I signed for Chelsea I never ever thought I’d score 100 goals,” she said.

“And to do it for such a massive club as Chelsea and a club that I love so dearly it’s an amazing achievement and something I’m really proud of.

“I’m a goal scorer, that’s what I love doing, and those 100 goals represent a lot of hard work, dedication and sacrifices to get there.

“I know people may think scoring 100 goals is just another thing, but for me, it’s an amazing achievement and something I’ll look back on for the rest of my life.”

Kerr reached the landmark in just 128 games for Chelsea.
