‘He’s a giraffe, I’m a tiger’: Tszyu’s pointed sledge, ‘history repeats’ tip at HECTIC Vegas weigh-in

LAS VEGAS — Tim Tszyu has declared his “throwback era” officially underway – while also branding some of the world’s biggest boxing stars “pussies” — after officially making weight for his world title here inside the MGM Grand.

The undefeated Australian superstar also suggested towering US rival Sebastian Fundora looked “thin” and a completely different animal, declaring: “He’s a giraffe and I’m a tiger.”

Only a day out from his championship blockbuster against America’s Fundora, the two fighters have both hit the scales at exactly the same weight: 152.8pds, or 69.3kg.

Despite the challengers weighing in even, Tszyu suggested the much taller American looked thin, while No Limit CEO George Rose agreed his own charge looked “much more imposing”.

Speaking with Australian media backstage afterwards, Tszyu also revealed he would add a further 10 kilos before entering the ring for what is, undoubtedly, the headline act of a monster Aussie boxing weekend.

But as for Fundora?

“His legs were quite thin,” Fundora said. “His body is quite thin.

‘DAVID VS GOLIATH’: Ex-world champs reveal blueprint for taller rivals… and why it suits Tszyu

“We’re two completely different animals.

“He’s a giraffe and I’m a tiger.”

After the pair squared off for the final time, Tszyu then threw oversized mock uppercuts, while still shirtless, as if to show the crowd everything required to bring down a 197cm rival.

“This is David versus Goliath,” said Tszyu, who stands 12 centimetres shorter than Fundora. “And history repeats.”

Tsyu then told the crowd he was ready to bring a new era to boxing in the US.

“This is the throwback era,” he started, before taking aim at some of the world’s biggest names with “none of these pussies should be in this era”.

Backstage, Tszyu then told Aussie journalists that he had played pickle ball and basketball the night before hitting the scales and had even enjoyed a slice of “healthy cheesecake”.

The WBO super welterweight champ also confirmed he would be supporting fellow Aussie, and famed arch rival, Michael Zerafa in his own world title bout on the same card against WBA middleweight champ Erislandy Lara.

From the weigh ins, Tszyu said he would be headed back to his rented Las Vegas home to eat, watch movies, relax by the pool, even play poker with his crew.

“And for money of course,” he laughed.

How you going?

“I’ve lost a couple of times,” the fighter grinned before saying how great mate and chef, Omar “has been doing alright”.

Asked about the “throwback” line he made out on stage, Tszyu explained: “I grew up in that boxing era where fighters were fighters.

“I stand by that.

“That’s how I am … my beginnings.”

He also said a win here in Las Vegas would mean “everything”.

“You work your entire life for these moments,” he said.

“This is the NBA clutch, grand final three-point moment.

“The NFL Super Bowl moment.

“This is the biggest of the biggest.

“You dream of this as a young kid and I’m living the dream.”

The son of Hall of Famer Kostya Tszyu was then asked if his family is now the greatest boxing clan on the planet?

“That’s the aim,” he said.

“To be the greatest fighting family that ever lived.

“I just have to keep going .

“Try to reach even greater heights than my father.

“It’s a tough one.

“But anything is possible.”

Tough surname to carry?

“They’re talking now that Kostya is Tim’s dad,” he smiled.

“That’s great to hear.”

Tszyu also claimed that despite the bad blood between he and Zerafa, who famously pulled out of an all-Australian blockbuster between the pair, he would be cheering ‘Pretty Boy’.

“Yeah, 100 per cent,” he said.

“Right now, I’m solely focused on Fundora and he is solely focused on Lara.

“But as countrymen we should support each other.

“We saw each other backstage (today) and shook each other’s hand.

“Yeah, there is beef.

“I’m still pretty mad at what he did but I want him to succeed.

“Because it makes boxing big in Australia.”

Asked about the height difference with Fundora, he continued: “Technically it’s going to be tough at first.

“But as any great you have to adapt to your situation.

“And I back my ability against anyone in the world.”

And as for his David versus Goliath reference?

“It’s who won in the end,” he smiled.

“It’s not about the size of the man in the battle, it’s the size of the heart.

“Doesn’t matter the size of the man.

“Every man bleeds the same blood.

“So I take inspiration from his story coming into this fight, it gives me that edge.”

While the televised weigh-ins were held before a large crowd inside the MGM Grand, the officials ones took place several hours earlier and were off limits to the press.

Asked soon after how Tszyu had looked at those, Rose said: “He’s at his absolute depletion, and still looks physically imposing.

“Of the two on the scales, Tim looked much more physically imposing.

“And he’s about to swell back up.

“Will look amazing, even in the next couple of hours.”

Later, the promoter added of Tszyu: “Rippling abs, big chest, a fighter ready to go.

“He’s on.

“Absolutely switched on. You can see it in his eyes.

“He wants this, he wants it badly and he wants it more than anyone else.”

Elsewhere, fellow Australian Michael Zerafa weighed 158.6 pounds (71.9kg) while champion Erislandy Lara was 159.8pds (72.5kg).
