‘Crikey!’: Bomber’s curious set-shot attempt leaves Fox Footy commentators stunned

We’ve seen set-shot snaps around the corner from directly in front of goal.

But banana kicks? Well, maybe this is a new normal footy fans and commentators will have to adjust to.

Because Bomber Matt Guelfi’s checkside attempt from a set-shot on Friday night was a jarring sight for Fox Footy commentators.

Less than one minute into Friday night’s Community Series clash, Guelfi took a diving chest mark just outside the goalsquare. The medium forward was on a slight angle, albeit the wrong side for a natural right-footer.

Expecting Guelfi to kick a traditional drop punt as part of his set-shot routine, AFL greats Brad Johnson and Jason Dunstall were left flabbergasted when Guelfi pulled out a banana kick.

Guelfi’s attempt had too much left-to-right curl, consequently registering a behind.

“Wow! That was a checkside from 15m out on a slight angle,” Johnson said in Fox Footy commentary.

“Looks like we’re going to have to get used to it throughout the year – or they’re just trialling it throughout the summer. Crikey.“

Dunstall added: “You don’t trial it the week before the season unless you’re running with it.”

Guelfi’s attempt also stunned fans on social media.

Guelfi has kicked 45 goals from 96 games for Essendon since being drafted with Pick 76 in the 2017 draft.
