‘Hard work pays off’: Australia’s ‘most popular century’ as cursed one-Test star Will Pucovski finally fires again

Will Pucovski has fired a Sheffield Shield century that will have the Australian cricketing world smiling, as the one-Test young gun returned after his latest concussion battle.

The Victorian took 258 deliveries to record his first first-class century in more than three years against New South Wales at the SCG on Sunday.

Since Pucovski’s last trip to triple figures he has played his one Test match, in January 2021 at the same ground, suffered several of his 11 concussions and taken time away from the game for mental health reasons.

But he has played five Shield matches this season, and the promising batter has now scored a total of seven tons in 35 first class matches, reminding the nation of why he earned a spot in the national side.

Pucovski was eventually dismissed for 131 by Nathan Lyon as Victoria declared at 6-454, with Peter Handscomb and Nic Maddinson also hitting centuries for the visitors.

NSW was dismissed in the first innings for 252 and was 3-40 after 23 overs in a bid to avoid an innings loss.
