‘Truly special’: Meet the ‘greatest Aussie boxer you’ve never heard of’

Australian middleweight sensation Cesar Mateo Tapia has signed a long-term fight deal with No Limit Boxing — adding him to a growing stable headed by Tszyu brothers Tim and Nikita.

Fox Sports Australia can reveal that after fighting almost exclusively with international promoters since turning professional at age 18, Tapia has now inked on with the Rose brothers.

Hailing from Narrabeen, Tapia is one of the nation’s most entertaining and sought after fighters given his undefeated record of 16-0.

While the 25-year-old has been living and training in the US, his new No Limit deal means he is now preparing for an exiting return Down Under in coming months.

Promoter George Rose said he is looking to unleash the former Australian champion into action as early as April.

Tapia also revealed he plans to relaunch his career at middleweight, having campaigned at super middleweight since his 2016 pro debut.

“They say that good things come to those who wait and I couldn’t be happier to sign with No Limit Boxing and the Rose brothers,” the fighter said.

“With the backing of No Limit Boxing, I believe everything is possible.

“They’ve done great things in the country for the sport.

“I believe I’m one of the best fighters in Australia, I’ve just never had the chance to show too much as I’ve been fighting overseas for the last couple of years.

“There’s not much I haven’t experienced already in my life, both inside and outside the ring.

“It’s what drives me to be better each day and I’ve given my life to this sport.

“It’s why I’m so excited to be coming back home, fighting back home and showing the people of Australia they have another great fighter and future world champion in front of them.

“Let’s get this show rolling.”

No Limit CEO Rose also praised the new partnership.

“I am delighted to finally welcome Mateo to the stable,” the promoter said.

“We’ve been massive fans of Mateo and everything he brings to the sport and are honoured to be trusted with the next steps of his career and getting him a world title shot.

“People have told me Mateo’s the best Australian boxer you’ve never heard of.

“It’s our job to flip that narrative, because he’s honestly one of the most brutal and entertaining fighters in the world.

“He’ll feature very highly on on some of our biggest cards.

“He’s already proved he’s world-level status at super-middleweight, so it’s also exciting for him to be bringing that power down to a middleweight division that, in all honesty, is ripe for the picking.

“He has those same rare qualities you only see in the truly special fighters. It’s why I’m confident it’s a matter of when, not if, he takes over the division.”
