‘Totally feasible’: The drastic measure Supercars must take to avoid champ’s worst nightmare

Former Holden Racing Team boss Jeff Grech believes it is “totally feasible” for Supercars to offer up a spare racing licence to ensure defending champ Brodie Kostecki competes in the 2024 season.

Kostecki has made his intentions to leave Erebus clear and is locked in negotiations to make the split official.

However, leaving Erebus would leave Kostecki without a seat for the 2024 season, a remarkable scenario given he won the title just last year.

But there’s a chance he would be back on the grid in a matter of weeks thanks to Supercars holding a spare Teams Racing Charter (TRC), something all teams must have if they are to compete.

Given the 2024 Supercars season gets underway with the Bathurst 500 on February 23, it is an extremely short timeline for Kostecki to not only secure a permanent exit from Erebus, but also be offered a drive at a new team.

However, Grech is adamant it is possible.

“I think it’s totally feasible, because some of the bigger teams have a third car. It would be a great coup for the category,” Grech told WWOS.

“It would be great for Brodie, great for the series, great for the fan base and probably great for the team.”

One team who could snap up the spare TRC, should Supercars relinquish it, might be Triple Eight.

The Supercars powerhouse recently debuted its new Chevrolet Camaros for the 2024 season, which will be driven by Broc Feeney and Will Brown.

But the silver lining for Kostecki in this situation is that Triple Eight retained one of their three cars it raced last season as a spare chassis, meaning they’d have a car ready to go for the defending champ.
