Blues recruit avoids conviction but set for AFL ban after guilty plea

Carlton recruit Elijah Hollands has avoided conviction but has pleaded guilty to possession of cocaine.

Hollands was traded from Gold Coast to Carlton this month, with both clubs aware he was facing a charge of possessing a dangerous drug.

The 21-year-old was sentenced to two months of good behaviour and must attend a drug education session, reports Channel 7’s Mitch Cleary.

It leaves Hollands likely to receive a two-match ban under existing AFL precedent.

The Herald Sun’s Jon Ralph reported on Tuesday that Hollands had a likely three-year deal at around $350,000 a season withdrawn by the Blues once they learned of his charge.

Instead, he is now on a one-year deal and will look to prove himself to the club and secure a longer term commitment.

Fellow AFL players Jack Ginnivan and Brad Crouch were among those to receive two-match bans and an illicit drugs strike after admitting to drug use, which was revealed publicly.

Hollands was selected with pick No.7 by the Suns in the 2020 draft, but failed to establish himself in the Suns’ senior side, playing just 14 games.

He was traded to the Blues along with pick No.28 and a future fourth-round pick in exchange for pick No.26 and a future third-round pick.
