’Beat the crap out of him’: Aussie champ Jai Opetaia responds to surprise Fury ‘prize fight’ call-out

Australia’s undefeated cruiserweight king Jai Opetaia says he will happily “beat the crap out of Tommy Fury” following an open invitation from the boxer’s world champion brother – who is only days out from his own big-money blockbuster.

Almost a year after last defending his WBC heavyweight crown, English megastar Tyson Fury finally returns to Main Event this Sunday in a hyped crossover bout against Francis Ngannou, the former UFC champ, in Saudi Arabia.

More than being billed as the bout to determine ‘Baddest man On The Planet’, the Ngannou showcase could also potentially ruin another Fury fight slated before Christmas – with the champ also signed to an anticipated December 23 unification showdown against Oleksandr Usyk, who holds the IBF, WBA and WBO straps.

As part of his preparations for that fight, Fury is set to fly Opetaia into camp so that the 28-year-old Aussie can mimic the style of Usyk, who like him is a southpaw.

Yet in an intriguing twist, Australia’s IBF champ also received a surprise call out, of sorts, from Fury this week while the Brit was promoting his Ngannou showcase on Ariel Helwani’s The MMA Hour.

After revealing younger brother Tommy had already made $25 million his boxing career – which includes, most recently, wins over influencers like Jake Paul and KSI – Fury then went on to say his sibling should now be on the radar of every cruiserweight and light heavyweight champ on the planet.

“Whoever the cruiserweight world champion is,” Fury stated, “WBC, WBA, whoever they are, they would be over the moon to fight Tommy for their title.

“I know who the light heavyweight champions are, Bivol and Beterbiev.

“They’re not making the money Tommy is.

“This game is called prizefighting … and regardless of how you get this prize, or who you have to fight to get it, the ultimate aim is to get the prize.

“And Tommy has been doing that.”

While Tommy Fury (10-0) is nowhere near the level of Opetaia, the man who won his first world title with a jaw broken in two places is more than happy to take the fight Down Under.

Speaking with Fox Sports Australia this week, the champ also tipped Fury to get it done in Sunday’s headliner against Ngannou, however only after warning the former UFC superstar will “come in swinging”.

The now Brisbane-based fighter also revealed he had spoken with Team Fury as recently as two days ago about the champ’s upcoming camp, and said he was looking forward to having an opportunity to go “show who I am”.

But as for there being any chance Ngannou goes and ruins that opportunity by shocking the world this Sunday?

“Look, a guy of his size is always dangerous,” Opetaia said of the fighter who, apart from being on a run of six straight wins when he sensationally quit the UFC in January, has also held the world record for heaviest punch.

“And I don’t doubt this Sunday Ngannou is going to come in there swinging.

“Which I’m definitely excited to see.

“If I’m having a bet though, my money would definitely be on Tyson.

“Although we’ve never seen Ngannou in the boxing ring.

“So how are his skills? How does he move? How durable is he?

“Those little UFC gloves, they’re completely different to boxing.

“So who knows? Ngannou could go out there and surprise everyone.

“But I don’t see it.”

And as for the Tommy Fury offer?

“You know, boxing is my job,” Opetaia said. “It’s how I put food on the table.

“So while Tommy Fury isn’t on my radar, if he wants to fight for a world title, sure, he can come and get it.

“I’ll happily beat the crap out of him and get straight back to chasing those belts.”

Watched any of his recent fights?

“I’ve never watched him live, no,” the champ continued. “But I’ve seen a few clips on social media.

“And he’s not s….

“The guy knows what he is doing and comes from a boxing family.

“But there are levels to this game.

“And I’m on the world champion level, fighting for world titles. He’s still got a long way to go to get there.

“But if he wants to have a crack, wants to come to Australia and put on a big fight, let’s do it.”

Opetaia also said he was excited to join Fury in camp for his showdown with Usyk.

“As soon as they reached out with the offer I said ‘OK’,” he explained.

“It’s a huge experience to be training with the heavyweight world champion, and obviously a great opportunity to learn.

“But I’m also keen to show them who I am, too.

“That’s where respect is earned, in the ring.”
