‘This is why I do it’: Tszyu issues final message amid icy final staredown at weigh-ins

Tim Tszyu and Brian Mendoza had an icy final staredown as they weighed in for their world title fight.

Tszyu puts his WBO super welterweight world title on the line for the first time against Mendoza at the Gold Coast Convention Centre on Sunday.

It is the second straight fight Tszyu has had at the venue as he produced a vicious first round knockout of Carlos Ocampo in June.

Tszyu will no doubt be hoping for a similar outcome when he takes on Mendoza, who tipped the scales at 69.85kg.

The American, who was greeted with some boos as he made his way on stage, decided to send a message of gratitude to Australia but promised a “great show” on Sunday.

“I honestly appreciate all the love,” Mendoza said.

“I know tomorrow night might be a little more of a hostile crowd. But I’m here to put on a great show for you guys and take this belt home.”

Meanwhile, Tszyu weighed in at 69.44kg and soaked in the moment in what he has promised will be his last fight on Australian shores for some time.

As he glanced out across the crowd that had gathered to watch him weigh in, Tszyu had plenty of admiration for all who had turned up.

“This is the reason why I do it, for every single one of you,” Tszyu said.

“I live for these moments. Tomorrow night, we get the job done.”

The two then locked eyes in a final staredown that seemed to last an eternity, with neither man feeling the need to add some final words for one another.
