‘Can’t make this up’: ‘Peak irony’ in Novak Djokovic shot of the day

Sometimes a sports story just about writes itself.

That is the case here over an incident involving the broadcast of Novak Djokovic’s incredible victory in this year’s US Open.

Host broadcaster in the United States, ESPN, has a segment called “Shot of the Day” and its final entry featured, of course, Djokovic.

Now there’s already a little irony behind a “shot of the day” for one the most famous anti-vaccine advocates in the world, but sure, we hear you, it’s a common enough term in tennis.

What’s not common is one of the principal sponsors of the whole grand slam tournament being Moderna, the company that produced one of the main vaccines used globally against Covid-19.

The moment, in fact, is called the “Moderna Shot of the Day”.

Now we imagine Djokovic may have featured in a few of these over the two weeks of the tournament, we’re not certain.

But we know he was “honoured” with the shot of the day on Monday (AEST), his match point against Daniil Medvedev to claim a remarkable, record-extending 24th major singles title.

“We’ll take you to the Moderna Shot of the Day,” the host says alongside tennis legend John McEnroe.

“It was the match point to get to (grand slam) No. 24.

“There were a lot of shots that were highly impactful, here’s the final one.”

Yet it was the shots that Djokovic refused to get that were quickly highlighted in social media posts from right across the globe, many in languages we can’t read.

Djokovic of course hosted parties during lockdowns and was ultimately deported from Australia ahead of the 2022 Australian Open due to his refusal to get vaccinated against Covid-19.

He was also locked out of the 2022 US Open over the country’s vaccination requirements at the time.

There were so many comments and retweets of the ESPN video it’s hard to know where to start, but we picked out a few examples for you.

One came from a guy that calls himself The Trad Coach on X, formerly Twitter.

“You can’t make this up,” he wrote. “One of the most accomplished athletes on the planet who refused the Covid vaccine, has the Moderna Shot of the Day.

“Novak Djokovic wins his 24th Slam of his career!”

Other comments included “oh my god, is this real” and “you can’t make this up”.
