Australian light heavyweight Tyson Pedro has scored a brutal knockout win at UFC 293 – and one of the best wins of his career – despite a crazy camp that involved popping a rib and receiving six stitches in sparring.

Pedro kicked off the Pay-Per-View section of UFC Sydney in stunning fashion when he dropped Swede Anton Turkalj with a brutal right hand and then finished him on the ground.

While Turkalj is dubbed The Pleasure Man, it was popular Penrith product Pedro who not only scored the devastating finish, but then celebrated with a Samurai rendition.

Making the performance even more incredible, Fox Sports Australia can reveal Pedro had a hectic final fortnight preparing for what would be a brutal first round knockout of Turkalj.

Preparing alongside UFC megastar Israel Adesanya at Auckland’s famed City Kickboxing, the Aussie popped a rib and suffered a cut above his eye which required stitches.

Asked about the incident, he said: “Bro, we were doing a wrestling drill … my partner went one way, I went the other and it just popped out.

“It’s just one of those things. But with all the odds against me, I still felt like ‘Ok, gotta go’.

“I knew I was good to go brother.”

Despite losing last start against Modestas Bukauskas, Pedro has now won three of his last four fights.

Asked about winning in front of his home crowd, Pedro said: “I’ve been f…ing imagining this every night.

“I knew I was going to bring it home for Sydney.

“My right hand has been on this camp… I knew he was going to rush in. I was surprised he doesn’t rush in as much, I think he knew I was dangerous.

“Thank you to my team.

“Thank you to everyone who supports me and more importantly thank you to those who don’t, you put a chip on my shoulder, made me go harder.

“Don’t let anyone dim your light, if they try to put out your fire pour some gas on that b…h and blow it up.

“I love you Sydney, see you at the after party.”
