‘They will not give up’: Liverpool star Salah staying put… but Saudi threat still remains in the future

Mohamed Salah will be staying put at Liverpool while a late bid for Manchester United star Jadon Sancho also failed to amount to anything as the Saudi transfer window closed.

Demarai Gray became the latest Premier League player to leave for the Saudi Pro League after joining Al-Ettifaq on Friday.

He joined former Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson at the club, while Neymar, Riyad Mahrez and Karim Benzema have been among the biggest names in the football world to make the Saudi switch.

There was a possibility both Salah and Sancho could join them, with Liverpool turning down a £150 million offer from Al Ittihad on last week’s deadline day for Europe’s big five leagues.

The Saudi window, however, was still open until Friday and there were reports a world-record £215 million offer could be coming to try snare Salah in a last-minute bid.

That failed to eventuate though, with Sancho also staying put at Old Trafford. He is expected to hold talks with Manchester United as the young winger looks to rebuild his career.

Sancho was dropped from United’s squad to play Arsenal last weekend, casting further doubt over his immediate playing future.

“On his performance in training we didn’t select him,” United manager Erik Ten Hag said. “You have to reach the level every day at Manchester United. You can make choices in the front line, so in this game he wasn’t selected.”

Sancho though dismissed those claims on social media and is now expected to discuss his current situation with Ten Hag and the coaching staff soon, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

As for Salah, this does not mean a potential switch to the Saudi League in the future is off the cards according to Sky Sports News’ Vinny O’Connor.

O’Connor said on Sky Sports News that the expectation is that Al Ittihad will look to make an improved offer in January to lure the striker away from Liverpool in a move that could benefit both sides.

“I think there’s every chance they would look to get a deal for Mo Salah done in January and beyond that,” O’Connor said.

“Al Ittihad’s stance is that they will not give up on signing Mo Salah. That’s the bottom line at the end of the day, they have not ruled out going back with an improved offer.

“They believe, from their perspective, there is still a deal to be done.

“Remember, Al Ittihad are willing to pay Salah around £1.5 million a week, which would make him the highest-paid player in Saudi football. On the other side of that, a sale for Liverpool becomes more and more attractive as time goes on.

“Looking beyond January, you consider next summer a £100 million for a player going into the final year of his contract who is in his early 30s, there’s more than an argument to say that makes business sense.

“For now, Liverpool remain of the view, he’s a key player, that’s why they worked so hard to tie him down to a new contract. They pay him £350,000 per week, making him Liverpool’s highest-paid player in their history. And he remains a top performer in the Premier League.

“But as time goes on the chances of an improved offer coming in from Saudi Arabia will increase.”

Arsenal legend Ian Wright suggested as much during the week too, declaring Liverpool “will have to make that deal at some stage”.

“They’re very fortunate that a powerhouse like the Saudis can come in and they’ll wait and still pay extraordinary amounts of money for a player that’s going to be 32 next year,” Wright said on The Kelly & Wrighty Show on Optus Sport.

“They might wait, they will wait won’t they because he’s so big and he’s worth waiting for.

“But Liverpool will have to make that deal at some stage, no doubt about it, have to.

“At some stage someone’s going to have to go, ‘Stop, OK, yes’ because it’s too much money to turn down for a business — Liverpool’s a business.”
