‘Don’t like the Goldilocks zone’: Tszyu set to follow Tim as gruelling Thai camp awaits

Nikita Tszyu is set to follow in the path of his brother Tim ahead of his next fight, with the youngest of the clan set to undergo a gruelling training camp in Thailand.

Tszyu will headline a pay-per-view event alongside Australian world title challenger Liam Wilson on August 23 at the Hordern Pavilion in Sydney as the final fight night in a bumper run of four cards in six weeks.

The 25-year-old is yet to learn who his opponent is but promised it will be a “big step up” and even confirmed it would take place over eight rounds.

Yet eight rounds will seemingly be a breeze once Tszyu completes his camp in Thailand.

Speaking to Foxsports.com.au, Tszyu revealed he will fly out on Friday to Phuket, where he will spend time at the fabled Tiger Muay Thai gym.

Countless superstars of modern day combat sports have spent time inside the gym, including UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski, Valentina Shevchenko and Tai Tuivasa.

Tim Tszyu has also spent considerable time at Tiger Muay Thai and is even over there now, although he is briefly headed back to Australia before returning to Thailand shortly after.

For Nikita, the opportunity to simply get away from the distractions that come with being at home is enough of a benefit.

“We’re going for a great conditioning camp,” Tszyu said.

“My uncle Igor (Goloubev) and Tim have spoken very highly of the place, very highly of the conditioning you can get from it.

“Just the focus of being in a place specifically for training. At home, you’ve still got distractions. I’ve got my dogs to walk every single day and they can be a pain.

“In Thailand, it’s going to be proper conditioning. It’s very humid in that area and there’s a little bit of altitude to it.

“We’re there to progress and get that conditioning level up.”

It is not the youngest Tszyu’s first trip to Thailand.

His last time there was just after he had finished high school, as he and a mate decided to go there instead of following the crowd to the usual Schoolies destinations of the Gold Coast or Byron Bay.

Unsurprisingly, Tszyu expects a much healthier trip this time around.

“I’m pretty sure my blood alcohol content (BAC) was much past the health limits,” Tszyu laughed.

“I really push myself when it comes to health and non-health. I don’t like being in the Goldilocks zone.”

The “Goldilocks zone” is, of course Tszyu’s unique spin on the comfort zone.

Regardless of which way you phrase it, the undefeated prodigy knows full well he will be pushed to breaking point in Thailand.

But if he enjoys similar benefits to what his brother experienced from a Thai camp, then it will all be worth it.

“A lot of fighters go to Thailand for the conditioning,” Tszyu said.

“They go there because it’s a great place to do a camp, it’s a great place to start a camp and have a good foundation set up.

“Tim did it before he went to America and when he came back to Australia, he was doing 15 rounds of sparring in the lead-up to the first Charlo fight.

“In the three-week camp he had there (in Thailand), he progressed like crazy. So I’m hoping to do the same.”
