Australia’s hopes of a UFC 290 clean sweep — and possible Monday public holiday — have been dashed in just 17 seconds, with Gold Coast flyweight Shannon Ross finished in one of the quickest KOs in UFC history.

One of four Aussies fighting in the UFC 290 card in Las Vegas – and set to be headlined by UFC featherweight king Alexander Volkanovski – Ross was finished in just the second fight of the night by a devastating first round punch from Jesus Aguilar.

The Mexican delivered a brutal overhand right that not only iced Ross but left him laid out on the Octagon canvas for several minutes.

Thankfully, the gutsy fighter who famously fought his way into the UFC with a burst appendix eventually recovered and, by the time he left the cage, was looking up at replays of the punch that finished him on the big screen.

Earlier in the week, Aussie Paralympian Dylan Alcott had called on UFC president Dana White to demand a Monday public holiday Down Under if all of his countrymen won.

Working in Las Vegas for Kayo Sports, Alcott asked White if Prime Minister Anthony Albanese should declare a holiday if all four Aussie fighters win on Sunday.

“I don’t think he gives a s … what I think to be honest,” White said, laughing. “But sounds good to me.”

But in a tough start for the Aussies, Ross was stopped for the second time in the UFC.

After a strong showing on the Australian scene, the Gold Coast mechanic famously earned a contract on The Contender Series despite suffering a TKO loss to Vinicius Salvador – with the fighter revealing afterwards he fought with appendicitis.

Immediately after hearing the news, White signed him to a contract.

In his debut however, Ross suffered a 59-second knockout loss to Kleydson Rodrigues.

The loss represented a tough couple of days for the Aussies, with breakout Perth welterweight Jack Della Maddalena also having his fight cancelled just 24 hours before it was due to take place, with US rival Josiah Harrell removed due to a rare brain condition.

Harrell’s manager, Maurice Blanco revealed his client had been diagnosed with moyamoya disease, a rare blood vessel disorder in the skull, which showed up during a pre-fight medical exam. Blanco called the revelation a “blessing in disguise.”
