‘F***’: Tszyu’s 3am effort after Charlo snub as title future, hitlist of new opponents revealed

Tim Tszyu trained at 3am on Sunday morning and is continuing with plans for a $300,000 Las Vegas training camp after learning he could be the WBO super welterweight champion — or turning towards a bout against the legendary Gennady Golovkin — as early as this week.

Fox Sports Australia can reveal WBO officials will on Wednesday announce if they are stripping Jermell Charlo of their title after the American opted out of his sanctioned Tszyu showdown to face boxing megastar Canelo Alvarez.

It comes as a host of new opportunities also emerge for the undefeated Sydneysider – among them a Golovkin bout, an all-Australian showdown with Michael Zerafa, even a Las Vegas showcase against the winner of Terence Crawford versus Errol Spence jnr.

Speaking with Fox Sports Australia on Sunday evening, No Limit CEO George Rose also revealed that regardless of whether Tszyu becomes Australia’s newest boxing world champion this week or not, he will still fight as planned later this year.

The 28-year-old is also understood to still be planning for a Las Vegas fight camp in coming weeks as he prepares for a host of potential challengers.

But as for who the opponent will be? And what will be at stake?

Back in May, WBO officials announced Charlo would have to face Tszyu, the interim champ and mandatory, by a September 30 deadline or be stripped of the title.

It followed on from the Texan withdrawing with a broken hand from what was initially slated to be a January showdown between the pair.

Yet instead of meeting the September 30 date as stipulated by officials, the super welterweight king is now going up two weight classes to face Canelo in a superfight on the same day.

Despite the initial WBO demands, there are now concerns the governing body — who could also make a good earn out of the Canelo showdown — could opt to give Charlo an exemption.

Certainly those advertising the bout will be hoping the sanctioning body make exactly that decision, given they are already going with the most obvious headline of ‘undisputed versus undisputed’. Fight posters also show both Canelo, the super middleweight king, and Charlo brandishing all four of their straps.

Yet should the WBO choose to stick solid and strip Charlo as promised, Tszyu would then be upgraded from interim champion – with all three other bodies almost certain to follow suit and remove the American of his other belts.

The IBF, for example, would then order Bakhram Murtazaliev versus Jack Culcay for the vacated title while over at the WBC, interim champ Brian Mendoza would be crowned the new king.

If this happens, Tszyu will then look to emulate his Hall of Fame father Kostya Tszyu and start collecting belts one and a time.

The most obvious option first up would be Mendoza, although the WBC have been looking to rematch him with Sebastian Fundora, who he upset for the interim strap.

Regardless, he would be the most lucrative fight at super welterweight.

If Charlo retains however, promoters No Limit will go out and find the biggest fight possible for their charge, with GGG among the names being discussed.

The former middleweight champ comes with a hefty price tag however, meaning Team Tszyu could also consider other options like fellow ranked fighters including Britain’s Liam Smith, or Americans Erickson Lubin and Charles Conwell.

Back in March, Conwell arrived Down Under as part of Harrison crew and stated he was also interested in a crack at Tszyu.

Asked if he was actually using the trip to get a closer look at Tszyu in the flesh, the undefeated fighter ranked No.1 with the WBC and No.3 with the WBO replied: “Of course, man.

“You know I’m somebody who is always checking out the landscape.

“And a Tim Tszyu fight, it will be a big opportunity for both of us.

“That fight is going to happen.”

Elsewhere, Argentine Brian Castano has been mentioned, as has Zerafa, while Tszyu could also potentially wait for the winner of Spence/Crawford.

Asked what he expected to hear at Wednesday’s WBO decision, Rose said: “Look the WBO has been terrific with us and really pushed for this fight with Charlo to happen.

“So I’ll be interested to see what the outcome is.

“But as far as Tim is concerned, it’s all about moving on to a plan that eventually sees him with that WBO belt wrapped around his waist.”

Tszyu returned home from an overseas holiday at the weekend and, within hours, was back to work in his Sydney gym, sweating through a tough workout before dawn.

Regardless of Wednesday’s outcome, the fighter is also looking at heading Stateside to start preparations for a bout at the end of this year.

Asked for the boxer’s response to the Charlo news, Rose laughed: “Same as the rest of us: ‘F…’.

“Initially, that’s what it was.

“Obviously everyone is disappointed because we’ve all been hanging out for this fight for two years.

“And Tim, he’s primed to beat Charlo.

“All the work he’s done, the fights he has taken recently, it has all been building towards Tim Tszyu walking away with those four belts at the end of the year.

“But I also understand Charlo’s decision.

“And put in the same position, I think everyone choses the Canelo fight.

“Because it’s an iconic fight; and the biggest money fight.

“It’s a chance for Charlo to make history, change his life.

“And what’s his alternative? Go and lose all four belts against Tim Tszyu.”

While Charlo has been sidelined since Christmas, an active Tszyu has gone and demolished both American Tony Harrison and Mexican Carlos Ocampo.

“And the plan remains getting those four belts,” Rose continued.

“Starting with the WBO and then working our way through.

“So we want a fight for Tim ASAP.

“He loves to fight and this is just one more obstacle that’s been put in front of him on his way to undisputed.”

For Charlo, the Canelo blockbuster has fallen into his lap after the Mexican superstar recently signed a three-fight US$100 million deal with promotional company Premier Boxing Champions (PBC).

Despite initially being tipped to fight Charlo’s twin, Jermall Charlo is understood to have said he wouldn’t be ready in time, despite having already been out two years. Canelo was also apparently offered interim WBC super middleweight champ David Benavidez, but told PBC he wanted somebody else first.

Enter, Jermell.

As revealed last month, Tszyu was planning to lock himself down in a $300,000 las Vegas fight camp from August in preparation for Tszyu.

Despite the impending change in opponent, the fighter could still depart in coming weeks for a US preparation for whatever comes next.
