Tim Tszyu’s fight against undisputed super-welterweight champ Jermell Charlo may have been delayed, but the Australian is never the type to sit idly waiting for his time in the spotlight.
No Limit CEO George Rose, however, believes the risk Tszyu is taking this time around is “absolutely crazy” in the context of global boxing.
Even though he was forced to undergo emergency surgery on a severe dog bite, Tszyu (22-0, 16 KOs) has answered the challenge to defend his WBO interim super-welterweight title for the first time.
Tszyu will on Sunday take on Carlos Ocampo (35-2, 23 KOs) at the sold-out Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Speaking at Friday’s press conference, Rose weighed in on just how big a risk Tszyu was taking in potentially throwing away his shot at Charlo given the potential impact of his injury.
“What Tim is doing is absolutely crazy as far as global boxing goes, the risks he is taking but that’s what he’s about,” Rose said.
“He’s [Ocampo] got a hell of a record. He’s a guy who can hit and he’s here to spoil the party. It’s an absolute risk he’s taking. As far as global boxing goes, nobody else in the world is doing what Tim would do taking on a guy like Carlos Ocampo.
“The last guy who considered doing stuff like this is Sebastian Fundora and that didn’t end well for him. He got knocked out taking that risk. Tim is taking an absolute risk in this against a big guy like Carlos and I’m not going to feel 100 per cent comfortable until he makes weight in the morning.”
Rose admitted to feeling “scared” but added he is “absolutely confident” Tszyu can get the job done regardless of the adversity he faced in the lead-up.
“Anything that Tim says he wants to do and says he can do, I believe him 100 per cent,” Rose said.
“I think he’s got the best team around. He’s the hardest working athlete in Australia… I’ve got every faith in Tim to get the job done.”

If it means anything, Tszyu can take confidence from the fact father Kostya holds a perfect 5-0 record against Mexican rivals.
Ocampo though didn’t think much of it when asked on Friday.
“It doesn’t matter. I’m not one of those fighters who got beaten by Tim’s father,” he said.
“I’m Carlos Ocampo and I’m going to show the difference between them and us.
“It’s going to be a real war but it’s not going to last very long and it’s going to be [a] win by knockout.”
While expectations are high for Tszyu as the heavy favourite, the Australian said he wasn’t feeling any additional pressure even with the disrupted preparation.
“I think I’ve dealt with pressure my whole life so for me this is nothing,” Tszyu said.
“Us athletes we do this for the fun of it, we do this for the love of it and we’re blessed to do this over and over again. Pressure? This is nothing.”

Tszyu also branded any suggestions that he was overlooking Ocampo as “nonsense”, pointing towards how hard he has trained in the lead-up to Sunday’s fight.
In fact, if anything, Tszyu said the fact so many people are overlooking Ocampo says more about his standing in the boxing world than anyone thinking less of his Mexican opponent.
“I think it sort of shows the position and level I’m at,” Tszyu said.
“It’s got nothing to do with him, he’s a top fighter. Whoever they put in front of me, I think whatever. I’ll annihilate them. If it’s Charlo, if it’s King Kong, if it’s a shark I have to go against or a pitbull I have to go against, I’m coming back for round two with anyone.”
As for his prediction for Sunday’s fight, Tszyu had two simple words.
“I’ve had these two words that are Spanish in my mind over and over again. It’s ‘No Más’. That’s the type of fight I intend to do,” he added.

Australian Sam Goodman (14-0, 7 KOs), meanwhile, will prepare for his toughest test yet as he faces Ra’eese Aleem (20-0, 12 KOs) in an IBF super-bantamweight world title eliminator.
Speaking at Friday’s press conference, both Aleem and Goodman promised fireworks in what shapes as an entertaining co-feature bout.
“I’m not looking for a way out. I’ve got this man for 12 full rounds of boxing and I’m extremely excited,” Aleem said.
“This fight is extremely important. When it comes to the bantamweight division I’ve been extremely avoided, I’m a top fighter… I can’t wait for all the fans to tune in, it’s going to be electric. I have a lot of pent-up animosity, I’m ready to throw some punches.”
“I’m confident in the work I’ve put in,” added Goodman.
“I know the people I’ve come up against in my training and my fights. I’m ready for this moment… I’m extremely confident I’m going to get the victory and move on to bigger and better things.”
