‘Gets on the p*** a lot and starts yapping’: Tszyu fires back after Charlo rant, makes bold KO call

A confident Tim Tszyu has predicted he will need no more than five rounds to finish Mexican Carlos Ocampo before then turning his attention to American superstar Jermell Charlo – a fighter who, he says, “gets on the piss a and starts yapping his mouth on Instagram”.

Only days out from his hyped WBO title defence on the Gold Coast, Tszyu fronted media for the first time in fight week – and delivered a KO prediction for Mexico’s No.1 ranked super welterweight.

The Australian star then also doubled down and returned serve at the division’s unified king Charlo, who he is slated to fight with victory over Ocampo inside the Gold Coast Convention Centre this Sunday.

Only last week, Charlo took aim at Tszyu in a colourful Instagram rant, saying: “When they release me, I’m knocking that b***h out from Australia, and I ain’t going to say nothing else.

“Yeah, this mother f**ker running his mouth and talk. You got to get confirmation from all the mother f**kers that you fought some because I’ve done my due diligence in the world of boxing.

“At 154, I’m the king. I’ve been a king; I’m the king. You got to go try to. You know what Tony Harrison told you. You got this staircase over here.

“Keep building yourself. When I do fight you, b**ch, it’s over. I don’t play that s**t. Big things in the way.”

Asked about the post, the undefeated Aussie shrugged: “I haven’t seen it.

“But he does get on the p*** a lot and start yapping his mouth on Instagram.

“I think that’s his problem.”

Regardless of his drinking and social media habits however, Tszyu added the American remains his top priority.

“I want the name Charlo,” he said.

“That’s the No.1 priority, the name I want on my resume.

“For me, it’s become … even if Charlo was to vacate, it’s not about the belts anymore.

“It’s about the resume, and the names and highlights you put on the resume.

“So Charlo is my aim.

“When you play video games there’s the big boss and then there are all these little bosses along the way to the big boss.

“So Ocampo is next.

“But Charlo is the big boss that I have my eye on.”

While Tszyu would not detail the weaknesses he sees in his first ever Mexican rival — “it’s nothing for me to say now, it’s for me to say Sunday” – he did predict the finish would come early.

“Round five,” he said when asked for a prediction.

Soon after however, Tszyu added that he was well aware of the challenges presented by Ocampo – whose only two losses have come in world title fights.

“I know he’s tough,” Tszyu said.

“So it could go the distance.

“I know he’s a fighter that has never backed down so he could be hard to get rid of.

“But look, I believe in myself. What I go through.

“And I think the opportunity (for a knockout) will come.

“But I’m ready for a tough fight.”

Tszyu also insisted he was carrying no lingering problems from the large gash suffered on his right arm when attacked by a dog only a fortnight ago.

Tszyu received 26 stitches to a large laceration on his right arm after being attacked by a mate’s bull terrier at a Saturday evening BBQ.

Initially, it was feared the interim WBO super welterweight champ would have to cancel Sunday’s title defence.

Yet while the fight remains on, the big concern now for Tszyu is what impact said injury will have on his ability to perform against the division’s best Mexican fighter – and what potential there is for Ocampo to target it.

Shortly before jetting out for Australia, Ocampo warned Tszyu he had “no excuses” and should protect the arm “at all times” after agreeing to fight just three weeks after emergency surgery.

The challenger also warned Tszyu he was ready to earn a great Australian boxing boilover.

“But man, 22 times people have said the exact same thing – that they’re going to beat me,” Tszyu responded.

“Words are cheap.

“Actions speak louder than words, and that’s what I do.

“I don’t need to convince people why I’m going to win. I just do it.”

Speaking with journalists before a Tuesday afternoon training session, the champ also insisted his dog bite injury was no longer an issue.

“I think it scared everyone else more than it scared me,” he said.

“I was always quite confident.

“Every camp you’re presented with different challenges.

“And while this wasn’t ideal, a day after, I was sweet.

“It’s just at the time, it was a bit nerve wracking.

“But we move on.

“Now it’s the fight.

“Forget about the dog bite.”

Tszyu added that he was looking to make a statement against Ocampo.

“Every fight I go into now it’s definitely a statement fight,” he said.

“Keep proving myself that I’m the best in the division.

“Try to prove it to the other boys as well.

“Let them all know I’m coming.”

And as for how he has been preparing for his first Mexican rival?

“I’ve been fighting pitbulls, man,” Tszyu laughed. “Literally.

“But really, boxing is universal.

“You go from country to country and do the same things – sparring, bagwork, padwork, game plans, road running … it’s the same old s*** every time.

“You just keep doing it.

“Simple.”

Tszyu also praised promoters No Limit, adding: “There’s a platform now here in Australia.

“Showtime, Jimmy Lennon Jnr, all this stuff is coming here.

“It’s crazy.

“No more local shows type thing.

“This is top of the tree, and we’re doing it right here in Australia.

“It’s part of history and I’m a part of that. I’m blessed.”

He added that there had been “a lot of respect” shown to him in interviews with US boxing media this week.

“Because I could’ve gone the easy path, taken a little time off and had a rest,” he said. “But that’s not me.

“I’m motivated.

“I feel like I just need to unleash. And this fight is going to be a good one for that.”
