‘Write what you want… but leave that out’: Star’s frosty journo exchange goes viral

Brazilian Thiago Seyboth Wild caused shock waves at the French Open on Wednesday (AEST) and not just for his stunning first-round victory.

The 172nd-ranked Seyboth Wild produced an incredible five-set upset win over second-seed Daniil Medvedev, 7-6 (7-5) 6-7 (6-8) 2-6 6-3 6-4.

But his exchange with a journalist in the post-match press conference quickly became its own talking point.

In 2021, Seyboth Wild faced a lawsuit filed by his ex-girlfriend Thayane Lima and was investigated by police in Rio de Janeiro over allegations of mental and physical abuse.

He denied the allegations, describing them as “fabricated and vengeful claims” in a statement released at the time.

On Wednesday, following one of the most high-profile victories of his tennis career, he was again pressed on the claims and did not respond kindly.

“I’m sorry I have to ask you this after a big win,” a journalist begins.

“But for the coverage I need to confront you – according to the media UOL Sport stating your ex-wife, you have been charged in June 2022 by the public ministry of Rio for domestic and psychological violence against your ex-wife.

“Since then, nothing happened in terms of sentence. What do you expect to happen?”

After looking to his left, perhaps seeking assistance from a media official, Seyboth Wild responded: “I don’t think it’s a subject that we should talk about it right here. I don’t think it’s a question you should be making to anybody,” he said.

“I don’t think it comes to you to decide whether it’s a place to be spoken of or not.”

The journalist responds, saying: “It’s public, I need to report, so that’s why I confront you. I just want to be fair.”

Seyboth Wild then replies, “You can write whatever you want” before adding: “And by the way, I was never married OK? So just leave that out.”

The 23-year-old was a US Open junior champion in 2018 and when he captured his only professional title at Santiago two years later at the age of 19, he became the first ATP champion born in the 2000s.

He was the first pro tennis player to reveal a Covid diagnosis in 2020 before his domestic violence allegations were widely reported on the following year.

In another odd twist, the Brazilian has also stated he is a massive Harry Potter fan, including

claiming to have tattoos of the Golden Snitch from Quidditch, the eyes of Hermione and even the head of Hedwig the owl on his body.
