‘Bring him to Sydney’: AFL fight winner to face Origin star as Team Fury accept ‘freak show’ bout

Tom Bellchambers will be given the opportunity to become Australia’s next crossover boxing star, with No Limit CEO George Rose revealing: “A few NRL boys might’ve been sinking down in their chairs watching him fight”.

Heavyweight stories proved the order of the night in Melbourne on Wednesday – with Bellchambers, Joseph Parker, even Tyson Fury’s team all talking up big opportunities moving forward

Speaking with Fox Sports Australia, Fury’s trainer Andy Lee said he would welcome either a unification bout with Oleksandr Usyk next or a “freak show” fight with former UFC heavyweight king Francis Ngannou.

The coach also hinted that an Australian card was extremely unlikely, saying “there’s only a few people out there who can still fight Tyson”.

Lee also said big possibilities should also open up for his other client Parker, who earned a decisive first round KO over Faiga ‘Django’ Opelu in the main event.

Lee said the New Zealander, 31, was definitely capable of making another run at the world title he won back in 2016.

Another big story, of course, was Fury doppelganger Bellchambers.

Tipping the scales at 122kg, the former Essendon ruckman drew praise from The Gypsy King – and plenty of others — following a devastating KO of Cameron Mooney.

Despite taking the bout on only three weeks notice, Bellchambers produced a brutal finish that now his promoters No Limit wanting to pitch him straight in with an NRL star.

While South Sydney’s Latrell Mitchell hinted on fight night that he wanted to face the winner, it is understood NSW Origin teammate Junior Paulo would be the more likely opponent.

Other contenders who will enter discussions over coming weeks include Matt Lodge and towering Melbourne Storm enforcer Nelson Asofa-Solomona.

“I know the NRL boys have long considered themselves tougher than those in AFL, but I reckon a few might’ve been sinking down in their chairs watching that fight,” Rose said afterwards.

“I’m not sure there will actually be too many boys wanting to put their hand up for this fight but we’d definitely like to bring Tom to Sydney next.”

“Tom recovered from a big shot early and proved he has heavy, heavy hands,” Rose said afterwards.

“The way he fights, it makes the ring feel like a phone box. You just can’t get away from him.”

Asked how quickly he would like to see Bellchambers back in there, Rose added: “He said he’ll be getting straight back into the gym so hopefully soon”.

While Fury has played up the idea of a world title fight in Australia this week, Lee stressed a unification bout with an undefeated Usyk seemed to be his “destiny”.

However, the coach said he would also be open to a blockbuster bout with Ngannou, who only recently walked out on the UFC.

“There’s only a few people out there who can actually fight Tyson,” Lee said.

“He’s achieved so much, it’s really a case of who is out there to challenge him?

“And while the fight (with Ngannou) would be a special type of attraction, like a freak show, if it’s about making the most money with the lowest amount of risk, that’s smart.

“And at Tyson’s age, the years he’s put into the game, why not?

“I think it’s a good fight for him.

But as for how long it lasts?

“Tyson could make it go for as long as he wanted,” Lee grinned. “He could mess around a bit, make Francis look good.

“Like Floyd Mayweather does sometimes.

“Then he could take him out when he needs to.”

Parker, meanwhile, revealed he was also ready to fight at least twice more this year after winning his first ever fight in Australia.

So who would he like?

“Listen, I want Dillian Whyte, I want Anthony Joshua and I want Joe Joyce,” he said, referring to his only three loses in a career spanning 35 fights.

“I want to erase those losses.

“Because I know if I had’ve been like I was tonight, it would’ve been a different performance against those guys.

“This is the best I’ve felt in a long time. And I needed a win like that.

“I want to fight again as soon as I can. Stay busy, get some momentum going and get back to the top.

“I had a spot where I went down a bit and my performances weren’t the best but I think I’ve found the right formula now.”

Lee agreed that he wants Parker to fight twice more this year and then be “in position to fight for a title”.

“Joe is right there,” the trainer said. “He’s still a star attraction and brings a lot to the table.

“He’s a former world champion and could fight anyone outside the top two – Tyson and Usyk, who seem destined to face each other.”
