‘Not a professional’: Tszyu rages over ‘group of hyenas’ as rival initially fails to make weight

Nikita Tszyu says hyped rival Ben Bommber has surrounded himself with American “hyenas” who are only talking him up as a world champion because he is paying them as the young Melbournian sensationally missed weight on Tuesday.

The rising star of Australian boxing also suggested the 21-year-old do whatever it takes to make weight – including “cutting off a testicle” – or the bout would be off.

On the eve of a fight set to confirm Australia’s next breakout star, Tszyu has taken aim at the US crew helping Bommber prepare for Wednesday night’s showdown at Margaret Court Arena.

It comes as the youngster, who is also undefeated in five fights, initially weighed in heavy for their super welterweight bout.

Bommber hit the scales on Tuesday afternoon at 70.3kg.

The super welterweight limit is 69.85kg.

After a quick meeting on stage with promoters No Limit, the Tszyu camp then gave Team Bommber two hours to make weight or have the fight cancelled.

He eventually returned to weigh in at 69.5kg

Elsewhere, both main event fighters, Joseph Parker and Faiga ‘Django’ Opelu, made weight while AFL heavyweight Tom Bellchambers hit the scales at 121.2kg, with rival Cam Mooney weighing 97.6kg.

Apart from the weigh-in drama, Tszyu also took a shot at the Americans inside his rival’s camp – led by popular US head coach Rodney Crisler – suggesting they were setting the young Melburnian up for a “brutal” beating from which he may never recover.

“He has all these coaches from America but he can’t even make weight,” Tszyu said as Bommber disappeared to cut.

“He’s not a professional.

“And now I want him to suffer. His face was all red and I heard he had been sweating only moments before.

“It’s quite ironic that he’s been chasing this fight (for years) and can’t make the simple demands of the sport.

“It’s a show of character.

“So he has to make the weight. Cut off a testicle or whatever.”

As revealed back in April by Fox Sports Australia, Bommber is being cornered for the biggest fight of his fledgling career by Crisler, the popular Las Vegas trainer who has worked closely with seven world champions.

Initially, the Las Vegas native was supposed to have jetted into Melbourne on Tuesday morning after having helped Devin Haney retain his undisputed lightweight crown.

A delayed flight means he will now fly in on fight day.

Elsewhere, Bommber has also employed Curtis Henderson, a strength coach from Team Mayweather, and been publicly backed by Top Rank executives.

“But Americans talk a lot,” Tszyu shrugged.

“That’s how I see it.

“Americans will say anything so long as you pay them the right money.

“My brother and his team were only saying the other day how they’re like a pack of hyenas.

“I saw it at the press conference, when he (Bommber) came in with his posse … it was like they were a group of hyenas.

“It’s kind of funny, really.

“He’s bringing over a strength and conditioning coach from Las Vegas. What for?

“It’s unnecessary.

“Same as bringing over a guy that does pads for Devin Haney.

“Why? You have a coach.

“It’s like he’s using them to try and prove he belongs at this level.”

Yet rather than helping him cause an Australian boxing upset, Tszyu says his younger rival is more likely to “s… the bed” in a loss that his career may never recover from.

“Because he has this really high expectation of himself,” Tszyu continued.

“So for him to s… the bed, suffer a brutal finish, really quick fight … that’s something he doesn’t really need at this time of his career.

“And it will be a really tough thing to rise back from.

“Because all these Americans, they’re calling him a future world champion.

“There is so much hype for him but, honestly, I don’t know where it comes from.

“Where does it come from?

“Yes, he’s undefeated in five fights, but who has he fought? The guy hasn’t had much of an amateur career, either.

“So there is all this talk, all this hype but I honestly have no idea where it comes from.”

None of which bothered his opponent.

“No drama,” Bommber said on his return. “Took us 20 minutes and we made weight.

“I’ve never missed before and it was all pretty easy.

“The time for talking is done. Let’s get it on.”

His manager Marin Jerak added with a laugh: “Ben was always going to weigh in heavier because he has the bigger heart.

“But otherwise, there were no issues.

“We had all the time in the world. I’m actually hearing Rolex want to sponsor Ben Bommber now.”

Back with Tszyu, meanwhile, and he suggested Bommber had actually been rendered “delusional” due to the way he had been talked up by his team.

He also said he had wanted to face off against the undefeated boxer at the weigh-ins, as he had something to say about what had happened in his camp.

“I had something to say,” Tszyu said. “Some bad news that I wanted to say face to face.

“I know what happened in sparring. I know there’s something wrong with you.”

Tszyu also said that in the Melbourne boxer’s most recent appearance against Queensland’s Ankush Hooda (4-2-1), many thought he lost the fight.

“Watching the fight, I scored it a draw,” Tszyu said.

“But honestly, I could’ve given it to Hooda and I know a lot of people who do believe Hooda was robbed of the win.

“So he (Bommber) is living a delusion.

“Everyone in his team, they’re saying he’s a lot better than he really is.

“As a fighter, he has a lot of openings. A lot of holes.

“Yes, he looks good against opponents who don’t have great technique — he can showcase himself because they’re not throwing shots that are super fast or technically sound.

“That’s why he has been looking OK.

“But still, there are a lot of holes.

“And if he’s been able to pick them up working with his American camp, we’ll see.

“But without tooting my own horn, he’s really been thrown in the deep end here.

“The level he is going up now, it’s drastic.

“I think he’s about to be met with a nightmare.”
