‘Enough’s enough’: Eddie Betts’ emotional plea after ‘targeted attack’ on AFL’s Indigenous stars

Carlton and Adelaide great Eddie Betts has vowed to keep educating Australians about the nation’s Indigenous culture after a quartet of AFL players were subjected to racist social media abuse over the weekend.

Brisbane forward Charlie Cameron, Adelaide star Izak Rankine and Fremantle duo Nathan Wilson and Michael Walters were all subjected to vile online abuse after games in Round 4. All three clubs condemned the abuse, with AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan declaring it hurts “all Indigenous players and players of colour across the league”.

“This has to stop,” McLachlan said on Wednesday.

“It not only hurts the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander players targeted but all Indigenous players and players of colour across the league as well as their families, their teammates and friends.

“We strongly support all our players and condemn the racial vilification of anyone in football and anyone in the wider community.”

Speaking on Fox Footy’s AFL 360 on Wednesday evening, Betts confessed he was not surprised by the social media attacks because “it happens all the time”.

“We continue to speak about it. We continue to call it out,” Betts said.

“When I saw what happened over the weekend, it was hard to see, and my love goes out to those boys and they’re families.

“Enough’s enough. When are we going to see a stance?

“It’s going to keep happening. It felt like it was a targeted attack.”

The disturbing news comes less than two weeks after Western Bulldogs star Jamarra Ugle-Hagan raised his jersey and pointed to his skin in a show of defiance having also copped abuse from the stands against St Kilda.

It was a moment that drew comparisons to AFL great Nicky Winmar, who in 1993 took a now-famous stand against racism during St Kilda’s clash with Collingwood.

“They don’t like Aboriginal people standing up for what they believe in and trying to stamp out racism. It feels like they want to put us back down in our boxes where they think we belong,” Betts continued.

“Everyone else needs to do their part and continue to talk and continue to educate and continue to have those conversations.

“Look at (Adam Goodes). He called out racism and it kept happening to him, and people were jumping on board even thought they didn’t know what was going.

“It is disappointing to see. We just have to continue to keep educating.

“We’re seeing change, but it’s always going to happen.”

In a statement, the AFL condemned the abuse aimed at Rankine, who has proven to be one of Adelaide’s best so far this season.

“The AFL in the strongest possible way condemns the hurtful and abhorrent racist remarks directed at one of the Adelaide Crows players over the weekend via social media,” the statement read.

“We stand with the club in calling out the racist comments, comments that cause significant hurt and harm for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

“The AFLIU has been contacted by the Adelaide Crows and will now provide support for those impacted and investigate the matter, working towards identifying the individual concerned.

“We strongly support all our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander players and condemn the racial vilification of anyone in the community in football.

“The AFL continues its ongoing implementation of the ‘Peek rule’ and the work never stops against vilification, especially in the online space and the challenges surrounding the identification of antagonists.

“The AFL wants to make clear, there is no place in our game for anyone who vilifies our players.”
