Bianca Andreescu gives injury update after heartbreaking scenes at Miami Open

Bianca Andreescu has given an update on her injury status after she collapse on court in agonising pain and had to be taken off court in a wheelchair earlier this week.

The former US Open champion’s return to form was cut brutally short on Tuesday when the Canadian suffered a left ankle injury in her fourth round Miami Open match against Ekaterina Alexandrova.

While attempting a return, Andreescu injured the ankle, collapsing to the court as she yelled in pain.

After receiving medical attention on court she was lifted into a wheelchair and taken off court in tears.

While receiving treatment Andreescu yelled “I’ve never felt this much pain.”

Andreescu was hugged by her Russian opponent before she was taken off court — the WTA later confirm she had suffered a left ankle injury.

On Thursday (AEDT), Andreescu gave an update on social media.

“Results show that I’ve torn 2 ligaments in my left ankle,” she tweeted.

“It’s tough to say exactly how long it will take, but let’s just say it could’ve been much worse!!

“I’m going to take it day by day, and I am optimistic that with the right work, rehab, and preparation, I’ll be back on court soon. Rehab process has already started and will continue to give updates. Love you all.”

Andreescu’s latest injury continues an unfortunate run of nasty injuries throughout career thus far.

In 2021 she retired from the final in Miami after suffering a right ankle injury against Ash Barty.

The 22-year-old, who won the US Open in 2019 but then missed all of 2020 due to injury, returned to the circuit last April after a six-month break.

In Miami she had looked very much back to her best with wins over Emma Raducanu, Maria Sakkari and Sofia Kenin before the fourth round match.
