Liverpool have been dumped out of the Champions League by Real Madrid as the hosts edged out the Reds 1-0 at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Needing to overturn a three-goal deficit, Reds boss Jurgen Klopp opted for an attacking lineup and named Mohamed Salah, Cody Gakpo, Darwin Nunez and Diogo Jota all named in the starting side.

And the bold line-up almost paid dividends within the first seven minutes of the game.

A ball floated over the top was misjudged by Madrid centre-back Antonio Rudiger, with Salah ready to pounce.

Ruidger slipped over but got back to his feet, although he was powerless to stop Salah from playing in Nunez.

But the Uruguayan’s effort was well saved by Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, as he stuck a foot out and watched the ball be cleared to safety.

Madrid then almost took the lead through Vinicius Jr, but his point-blank effort was denied by Alisson’s outstretched right arm.

Eduardo Camavinga then came closest when his long-range effort was tipped onto the crossbar by the Liverpool gloveman as the home side cranked up the pressure.

The breakthrough came in the 78th minute when a pinpoint pass from Camavinga found the feet of Benzema, but the ball was deflected into the path of Vinicius Jr.

The Brazilian then got tackled to the ground but managed to square it back for Benzema despite being on his backside and the star striker made no mistake with his finish into an empty net.
