‘I’m next’: US rival’s undefeated sparring partner makes bold challenge to ‘lesser fighter’ Tszyu

Tony Harrison’s sparring partner has boldly declared he will be next man up for Tim Tszyu after the Australian loses his world title blockbuster – with the undefeated prodigy declaring he is “already a way better fighter”.

Despite being ranked top four in three of the divisions where Jermell Charlo currently reigns, 25-year-old Charles Conwell has kept a low profile since arriving Down Under with the Team Harrison entourage.

As first revealed a week ago by Fox Sports Australia, the rising prospect has been used extensively by Harrison this camp – and even this week – as the former world champion looks to win himself the WBO interim super welterweight title.

Conwell’s presence has also raised plenty of eyebrows given, back in November, it was Team Tszyu who had him atop their own sparring list for what was initially a Charlo world title fight.

Speaking at Thursday’s open workouts in Bondi however, the Cleveland native stressed he would never have accepted any offers to spar Tszyu, declaring the Sydneysider “a lesser fighter”.

While confirming the approach had taken place, the 2016 Olympian revealed he actually sees himself as next man up for Australia’s boxing face once Harrison beats him Sunday.

In the WBO rankings, Tszyu is ranked No.1, Harrison at three, and Conwell one spot further back in fourth.

Elsewhere, the young American is also ranked No.2 with the WBC and No.4 with the IBF.

“So when Tony gets done with Tszyu, he’ll need a new fight,” Conwell said.

“And if he wants to take on another American, try and get back up there in the rankings, I’m here.”

Asked if he was actually using this trip to get a closer look at Tszyu in the flesh, Conwell (18-0) continued: “Of course, man.

“You know I’m somebody who is always checking out the landscape.

“And a Tim Tszyu fight, it will be a big opportunity for both of us.

“That fight is going to happen.”

Asked about being approached, initially, to help Tszyu prepare for Charlo, Conwell confirmed the talk but insists he never took the offer seriously.

“They wanted me to come help Tim after my last fight,” he said.

“But I got cuts on my eyes.

“And to be honest with you, I was never gonna help them anyway.”

Why?

“Why would I spar him?” Conwell responded. “We’re on the same level.

“Actually, I think Tim Tszyu is a lesser fighter than me.

“He’s got himself into a good position and everything.

“According to the rankings too, we’re on the same level.

“But I’m definitely a way better fighter.”

Conwell added the same was true for his close mate Harrison.

“He’s going to use his superiority this Sunday,” he said.

“Use his experience, his ring generalship, his elite level boxing.”

Conwell added he would never consider fighting Harrison, saying: “Tony and I, we’ve been sparring each other a long time.

“Since way back in 2015.

“Even before I turned professional.

“That’s why I don’t look at him as a future opponent. I see him as a friend, a brother.”

Speaking with the media after his workout, Tszyu doubled down on recent claims by head coach Igor Goloubev that he would beat Harrison by knockout.

“I truly believe that,” he said of a KO finish.

“It’s not if it happens, but when.

“Honestly, I’ve never been so relaxed. So excited.

“This has been 28 years in the making.

“It’s such a big event, such a big spectacle, but this is the stage I was born for.”

Told Harrison had been for a run around midday in the heat, Tszyu laughed: “He’s probably getting used to what he is going to do in the ring, which is run, run, run.

“But I’m not going to be running.

“I’m going to be chasing.”

Speaking before Tszyu, Harrison branded the Aussie “corny” while also suggesting he was enjoying the narrative about his rival’s youth, and pressure, being too much for him.

“That means he’ll come in with some reckless s… and get caught,” he said.

So what of Team Tszyu’s claim you’re going to be knocked out?

“They’re supposed to believe in their horse,” Harrison shrugged. “That’s the guy they’ve built up.

“The guy they want to get all the belts.

“But first step is Tony Harrison.

“And if Tim thinks he is going to come in and do what he did to the rest of those guys, it’s going to be a sad day in Australia.”
