In the wake of his heartbreaking and highly controversial world title defeat to Emanuel Navarrete, Australian boxing gun Liam Wilson has revealed his plan for an all-Australian blockbuster against George Kambosos Jr.
Wilson was on the brink of a stunning boilover of Mexican superstar Navarrete, knocking him down in the fourth round in Arizona. But Wilson’s dreams of claiming the vacant WBO super featherweight world title went up in smoke as Navarrete was given a very slow count, before spitting out his mouthguard to gain several additional seconds to recover.
When the fight resumed, Navarrete recovered to eventually stop Wilson (now 11-2) in the ninth round and become a three-division world champion.

Wilson and No Limit Boxing have launched an appeal to have the result overturned and declared a no-contest, and are also pursuing a rematch – but a mega-bout with Kambosos looms as a strong alternative.
“Either way, if it (the Navarrete fight) comes off as a no-contest and there’s a rematch for the title, I’m down for it,” Wilson told ABC Sport.
“Or even if they keep it as a loss and a rematch is allowed and I’m fighting the champion this time in Navarrete, if we can get the rematch for that belt, I’m all for it.
“If it’s not the rematch, I’d love to have an all-Australian showdown with George Kambosos. Those are the only two fights I’m really thinking about at the moment.
“I’d step up to lightweight, where he’s comfortable, I’m all for that as well.”
Kambosos stunned undefeated lightweight champ Teofimo Lopez in November 2021 by split decision to earn the WBA (Super), IBF, WBO, and The Ring lightweight titles. But the 29-year-old Aussie lost back-to-back fights to American Devin Haney via unanimous decision in 2022 as he attempted to unify the division.
26-year-old Wilson is quite large for a super featherweight and would likely be comfortable fighting at Kambosos’ lightweight.
No Limit Boxing CEO George Rose told foxsports.com.au that he expects Navarrete will turn down an immediate rematch with Wilson and instead look to fight Oscar Valdez – who Wilson replaced after Valdez withdrew with injury.
30-1 Valdez is a former two-division world champion, and a title shot against his fellow Mexican in Navarrete (37-1) appears highly appealing to both men, something which became clear as Valdez entered the ring after the Wilson bout and posed for photos alongside Navarrete.
Rose said: “They’ll do that (bout). Depending on how long Liam wants to recover – he did have a long camp over there in the United States as well – depending what he wants to do and is ready to go again, we’ll just go from there.”
Asked if Wilson would attempt to line up another title bout against the winner of the All-Mexico clash, Rose said: “It honestly depends when they fight. They’re notoriously slow with their turnarounds of fights over there in the States. Over here, a lot of our guys like to fight regularly, they want multiple fights every year.
“Liam could end up having a few fights before they even have that title fight.”
And while Rose says fighting a fellow Aussie is a strong possibility, he also raised the prospect of a massive clash with unbeaten Brit Archie Sharp (22-0). Sharp is the top contender to Navarrete’s WBO crown, with Valdez second and Wilson No.3. Should Wilson beat Sharp, it would be a massive boost for his bid to fight the winner of Navarrete and Valdez.
“He’s shown what he can do on the world stage. That guy’s at the top of the top and Liam proved that he deserves to be there,” Rose said.
“There’s a lot of great guys in his division.
“You’ve got Archie Sharp who is the number one contender at the moment in the WBO, I think that’s a great fight for Liam.
“Whether he decides to look for something more local or bring something in – he made it clear after the fight that he only wants big fights, he only wants hard fights.
“Everyone at the top, they’re all hard fights.”

Rose also revealed that Tim Tszyu sent Wilson messages of support before and after the gutting defeat, saying the pair are “both very supportive of each other, whenever they cross paths.”
Tszyu flew home from the USA just days before Wilson’s battle at the Desert Diamond Arena, but tuned in to watch his countryman’s gutsy performance.
Rose said: “Everyone watched it, everyone was supportive of Liam and felt for him that he was so close and that he put on such a good performance.
“I couldn’t sit still, I was jumping. I thought he had it! It was unbelievable.”
