‘No way’: Stunning act on match point leaves tennis world divided

A doubles semi-final at Challenger level has the tennis world engrossed after a controversial finish.

Unseeded pair Matteo Gigante and Francesco Passaro took on second seeds Marco Bortolotti and Sergio Martos Gornes at the Tenerife Challenger 2, with the underdogs holding a match point in the second set.

After missing his first serve, Gigante’s second delivery bolted towards the wrong service box, where it hit Gornes before bouncing and as a result gave Gigante and Passaro the point – and match.

Making the moment even more controversial was the precedent, with Passaro having done it to Bortolotti earlier in the match and Gigante nearly doing it three points prior.

Gornes could hardly believe what had occurred, while Bortolotti dropped his racquet and walked straight to his changeover chair.

While Gigante and Passaro’s potential tactic netted them victory over the second seeds, it wasn’t enough in the final, where they fell to Chris Harrison and Shintaro Mochizuki.
