Tennis legend Roger Federer is reportedly set for a sensational comeback to Wimbledon, with England’s The Telegraph reporting that the eight-time winner is in advanced talks with the BBC to work as a commentator on this year’s tournament.

The Telegraph reported he would likely split duties between the BBC and ESPN, such is the cost the 41-year-old demands.

After the retirement of Sue Barker from the BBC’s coverage last year after 30 years, Britain’s national broadcaster is looking to refresh their coverage.

Federer had a special relationship with Barker, who famously brought him to tears after his maiden title in 2003.

Accepting the Lifetime Achievement Award at the BT Sport Action Woman Awards in November, Barker inadvertently revealed the BBC’s presenting panel at the All England Club this year, saying it was “absolutely wonderful to leave it with Clare,” referring to English broadcaster Clare Balding, who was hosting the awards.

“But also Clare, this year at Wimbledon, myself, you and Isa Guha,” she said.

“To have three women presenting Wimbledon for the first time ever.”

Federer may have a special relationship with Sue Barker and Wimbledon, but winning the tournament eight times isn’t always enough to be recognised on its hallowed grounds.

He recently revealed he was denied entry to the All England Club by a security guard who failed to recognise him.

Talking to Trevor Noah on The Daily Show, he said: “When you win Wimbledon, you become a member automatically.

“And honestly, I don’t know about membership cards, they are probably at home somewhere and I’ve just been travelling, so I had no idea.

“I’m like, ‘No I don’t have my membership card, but I am a member. I’m just wondering where I can get in’.”

He claimed he was told: “Other side, but you have to be a member.”

“So I look at her one last time and I’m in a panic now – and I still can’t believe I said this because I still feel bad about this – but I look at her and say, ‘I’ve won this tournament eight times. Please believe me, I am a member. Where do I get in?”
