‘Us against the world’: The secret ingredient behind WWE trio’s absurd 2980-day record

In professional wrestling, stables come and go.

Some may last months, some will stick around for several years.

But The New Day, comprised of Kofi Kingston, Xavier Woods and Big E, have broken that mould by a significant margin.

The trio formed The New Day back in 2014 and have been going strong ever since for 2980 days and counting.

It’s not just the longest-tenured faction in WWE history that The New Day holds the record for, either.

Between the trio, they have the longest tag team title reign in history at a staggering 483 days.

Given the volatile nature of factions in WWE, what’s been the secret ingredient?

“We rotate who’s in it,” Kingston told foxsports.com.au to raucous laughter from himself, Woods and Big E.

“That’s the secret. You heard it here first.”

Once the laughter had settled, Big E provided a more philosophical insight into what makes the trio tick.

“I think we’ve always had a different approach to our group than a lot of other people,” Big E said.

“For us, out the gate, we wanted to make sure there was never a leader. It wasn’t about pushing someone at the cost of the others’ careers.

“We always made sure that everyone got an opportunity to shine, we were selfless. It was always about the group.

“In many ways, it’s like a good marriage. It’s not about me, I don’t put my needs above the group, and I think that’s why we’ve been able to succeed.

“I trust these guys with my life and I feel like that feeling, that trust, that love for each other has carried us through.”

Of course, such an incredibly long run in the WWE was not without its many, many difficulties.

After forming as a trio without an official name in July 2014, they were pulled from TV appearances due to WWE not being fully won over by the gimmick.

But after some months redeveloping what they wanted to be, The New Day emerged in November of the same year.

Big E recalls the days when they were continually repelled by the creative forces that be whenever they had ideas, believing it only served to strengthen the bond between them all.

“There were so many people who told us no, who laughed at us, who thought the idea of us coming together to form a group was absurd,” Big E said.

“I think when you have moments like that, that really test your ability, your patience, that really puts you against it.

“You can either fall apart, butt heads, or you can come together. I think for us, there was never a moment where we thought, ‘Oh, this won’t work, maybe we should have listened to people.’

“If anything, it got us closer together. It was us against the world.

“So when you keep knocking on these doors, we’re going to keep pitching, we’re going to keep going because we’re not going to stop.

“We knew from the beginning that we had a special chemistry. We really believed in each other.”
