Rhea Ripley has become Australia’s first WWE world champion, making history after defeating Asuka in the semi-main event of WrestleMania 37.

The Adelaide-born Ripley pinned the Japanese star after hitting a Riptide in a hard-hitting, physical match on night two of WWE’s biggest show of the year.

Ripley was a late addition to this match, replacing Charlotte Flair – the daughter of Ric – who was reportedly withdrawn from the match week ago due to medical concerns.

Ripley is not the first Australian to win a WWE championship – Melbourne’s Buddy Murphy was previously the Cruiserweight Champion – but the Raw Women’s Title is the most prestigious title won by one of our own.

Elsewhere on Monday’s (AEST) show, Universal Champion Roman Reigns was put over strong in the main event, pinning both WWE legend Edge and future Hall of Famer Daniel Bryan at the same time to retain his title.

Randy Orton’s match with The Fiend was a spectacle as expected, with fans booing the bizarre conclusion which saw Alexa Bliss distract The Fiend with black goo while sitting on top of a Jack in the Box, leading to an RKO and surprisingly simple Orton victory.
